Ready to support habitat restoration at scale—Native Tree ordering and project best practices from Rainforest Rescue

Order high quality trees for high planting success rates

With field ecologists and academics praising the outstanding quality of the native Wet Tropics trees grown at the Rainforest Rescue Native Nursery, it's a great time to plan your large-scale order of seedlings and young trees.

Whether you need fast-growing pioneer species or slow-maturing late successional plants, Rainforest Rescue grows native and endemic Wet Tropics species adapted to the intense climatic factors of the region. Their Native Nursery team pride themselves on achieving a high survival rate with trees that are carefully nurtured at the Cow Bay property and planted at restoration projects in the Far North.

Marine Deliens, Rainforest Rescue’s Nursery Manager, shared these key traits to explain why their wide variety (over 150 different species grown to date) of plants are a viable option for Wet Tropics restoration sites:

  • Sustainably and ethically sourced seeds, collected by experienced professionals

  • High genetic diversity from a wide range of seed sources

  • Healthy, vigorous seedlings with well-developed root systems and sturdy stems

  • Pest and disease-free stock, selected for resilience

  • Weed free seedlings, reducing competition in the field

  • Site ready plants, appropriately sized and aged for different revegetation conditions

  • Acclimatised seedlings, hardened off for survival in harsh conditions

  • Lower risk of transplant shock due to careful preparation

  • Proven success in the field, when planting and maintenance are well managed

Having a capacity to grow up to 150,000 plants a year means that significant tree orders are comfortably managed. This means conservation organisations could be restoring more hectares of former rainforest and native habitat than ever before.

Douglas Shire Councillors and Mayor visit Rainforest Rescue Native Nursery

The Rainforest Rescue Nursery Team welcomed Mayor Lisa Scomazzon and the Councillors of Douglas Shire to the Cow Bay Nursery in April. A nursery tour and extended discussion regarding restoration projects, local planning schemes, community enterprise and the emerging ‘Restoration Economy’ fostered greater understanding between the two Alliance organisations.

Do you know the 3Ps of Habitat Restoration success?

For landowners and conservationists in the Wet Tropics, the introduction of Carbon and Biodiversity Credits means there are more reasons than ever to restore natural habitat for our native flora and fauna.

To provide expert guidance, Rainforest Rescue’s Native Nursery and Land Management teams have put together a primer on Habitat Restoration, which focuses on the ‘3Ps’ – Planning, Plants and Planting! According to their teams, these factors are critical for a successful transition from degraded land into thriving, biodiverse habitat.

Their friendly team are also on hand to provide planting and regeneration tips when you place orders for Native Trees at their Cow Bay Nursery.
